Marine Resources Boosted Shandong’s Industrial Upgrading

The News Office of the Shandong Provincial Government held a press briefing on September 20. Chu Minsheng, director of the Marine Strategic Planning and Economics Division, Shandong Ocean Bureau, mentioned at the conference, “Shandong is promoting the development of new marine industries. Last year, the amount of cooling seawater utilized in the province was about 14.5 billion tons, gaining an increase of 17.9% from a year earlier; the added value of Shandong’s marine biomedical industry grew 19% from the previous year.

In recent years, Shandong has given priority to the development of the seawater utilization industry and actively planned and promoted the construction of major projects. The amount of cooling seawater used by nuclear power, thermal power, steel and petrochemical industries in coastal areas of Shandong has been increasing steadily. Last year, the amount of utilized cooling seawater was about 14.5 billion tons, gaining an increase of 17.9% from a year earlier. Moreover, the construction of the gigawatt-scale offshore wind power base project was constantly pushed forward. The two offshore wind power projects named Huaneng Shandong Peninsula South 4 and SPIC Shandong Peninsula South 3 were combined to the grid and worked at full capacity. They achieved an annual power output of over 1.6 billion kWh and a reduction of the carbon dioxide emission of 1.264 million tons, pushing the development base of the wind power industry from land to sea.
